Co-location is a rapid, economical and proven way of expanding the reach of network services. By placing a server within an existing datacentre outside of your existing network infrastructure, you instantly gain:
- Increased connectivity
- Reduced latency
- Improved security
- Physical location redundancy
- Reduced costs
- Ability to concentrate on your core business activity
By co-locating with Citric, you get all of the advantages above that you'd gain with any co-lo provider, with the added benefits of working with a small-scale company - great service, staff who you can personally identify with, and zero bureaucracy. If it's important that you deal with a company who look after you, perhaps because co-location is breaking new ground for your organisation, we'll be there to help you every step of the way.
Do I Need Co-Location or a Dedicated Server?
The basic difference between these two concepts is who owns the server. Typically, if you choose to co-locate a server (or servers) with us, you will provide the server. it's down to you what you put on it (so long as it's legal and doesn't break our terms of service) and we will make sure you can connect to it over the internet. We can provide support for what's on the server, but usually this would be down to you. This is the most flexible option, as it can be used for any service that requires an internet connection.
A dedicated server is one which we provide pre-configured for you to run certain services on, usually a web server. The advantage of this is that you still have a great deal of flexibility when it comes to how you run the service (compared to shared hosting plans), you get to decide what services you run, and you can get a lot more support from us. However, we can only install and configure what we know - Basically any Microsoft product.
So if you need somewhere to mirror your SQL database, a dedicated server is the way to go. If you want to pilot your new e-Bay killer written in PhP, put it on a box and co-locate it with us.
The key thing to remember is, with co-location, you rent the rack space and buy the bandwidth. The server is yours to take away at the end of the agreement. With a dedicated server, you lease the server. If you want to take the services away at the end of the agreement, you'll have to buy it from us, or arrange to have the data transferred.
